Chocolate Cookies – A timeless classic dessert
Chocolate cookies are a type of cookie made with cocoa powder or melted chocolate to impart a rich chocolate flavor. They come in various shapes, sizes, and textures, ranging from soft and chewy to crispy and crunchy. Chocolate cookies can be made with a variety of additional ingredients, such as chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruits, to enhance their flavor and texture.
One of the earliest recorded chocolate cookie recipes is found in the cookbook “The Complete Confectioner” by Frederick Nutt, published in London in 1789. This recipe, titled “Chocolate Cakes,” describes making small, round cookies using grated chocolate, sugar, and egg whites.
Over time, as chocolate became more widely available and chocolate production techniques evolved, chocolate cookies became increasingly popular. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, chocolate cookies were a common treat in households across Europe and North America.
The invention of cocoa powder, which is made by grinding cocoa beans and removing the cocoa butter, also played a significant role in the development of chocolate cookies. Cocoa powder provided a convenient and affordable way to incorporate chocolate flavor into baked goods, leading to the creation of a wide variety of chocolate cookie recipes.
Here’s a basic recipe to make the delicious chocolate cookies at home:

- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup (90g) chocolate chips or chunks (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat.
- In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- If using, fold in the chocolate chips or chunks until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Using a spoon or cookie scoop, drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Flatten each dough ball slightly with the palm of your hand or the back of a spoon.
- Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set and the tops are slightly cracked.
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the cookies cool on the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Enjoy your homemade chocolate cookies with a glass of milk or a cup of coffee!
Feel free to customize this basic chocolate cookie recipe by adding your favorite mix-ins, such as nuts, dried fruits, or additional chocolate chips. You can also experiment with different types of cocoa powder for varying levels of chocolate intensity.
